In less than 3 years, many of you reading this paper will be called upon for the first time to take the most important decision of determining the direction our country will take. The task is enormous. This is why, as a young person, you have to be bold, equipped, and have within you, the spirit of adventure which sees the horizon or the sky as the limit to which you will venture. Obviously, you need to have the courage within you. As Mariah Carey rightly sings ‘The hero is inside you.’ In other words you need to know what metal you are made of. This will also allow you to know the career you want to take up later in life. But remember, you need to be strong mentally, or else people will drag you in all directions. In my office I have a sticker that says ‘If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything!’ In other words, know yourself and have a dream. Secondly, at this point in your life, your studies are very important. We live in a world where a piece of paper called a certificate can determine your future. Concentrate on the work you have to do. Do not abandon your studies. Remember that many things in life that bring pleasure can wait. What you learn today helps build the foundation on which your future will be based. Ensure that it is rock solid. As young persons, always nurture the spirit of adventure, knowing that you can achieve your dreams only if you apply yourself to it. This also means not allowing yourself to be used to fulfil the dream of others, while you do not move forward. Again, an old negro spiritual sums it all beautifully, ‘Before I’d be a slave, I’d go down to my grave!’ Never be the slave of anyone or anything. Be strong, be brave, be knowledgeable, and move forward in life wanting the best and sticking to standards that will not get you on the wrong side of the law. Good luck to all of you. The future is yours. Convert every challenge into an opportunity. |
“Should politicians apologise when they get it wrong?”How often is it you hear a seemingly heart felt apology from a politician? It is pretty rare to get an apology from a politician. Should our politicians be ready to hold their hands up and say sorry a little more often? ......Aubrey Mt Fleuri School. Saying “sorry” is the equivalent of saying “I was wrong.” What’s wrong with being wrong? We are all wrong so often. Perhaps if we admitted to being wrong more often, the “rights” would mean more. In my opinion, every politician should be made to account for their action, for example their voting record. If they made a mistake, the least they could do is own up to it. But apologizing too many times, might wound up being seen as tactics to get the public’s sympathy. But if used sparingly, it could actually reflect the honesty and transparency of the politician. Definitely qualities we want to be governed by.
